Uterine Fibroid Embolization; An Alternative to Hysterectomy

It is estimated that about 50 percent of all American women of childbearing age suffer from uterine fibroids.  Uterine fibroids, or fibroids, are noncancerous tumors that grow in the wall of a woman’s uterus. They can grow as a single tumor, or there can be multiple fibroids in the uterus and can range in size. Depending on the size, number and location of the fibroids, some women may experience significant pain, pressure, and bleeding.  A common treatment for symptomatic fibroids is a hysterectomy, a surgical procedure to completely remove the uterus.  In fact, approximately 30 percent of all hysterectomies in the US are performed to treat uterine fibroids.

Understandably, many women are hesitant or uncomfortable with the idea of a hysterectomy.  There are alternatives to hysterectomy!  Less invasive procedures, like uterine fibroid embolization, are a safe and effective treatment for uterine fibroids and can spare the uterus.

If you are affected by symptomatic uterine fibroids and looking for an alternative to hysterectomy our physicians at Sound Vascular can help.  Located in Federal Way, we offer quality and compassionate treatment to patients in Seattle, Federal Way, Tacoma, Puyallup and Bellingham.

While a hysterectomy may be the best option for some women, the majority of women do not require a hysterectomy to treat their symptomatic fibroids.  Hysterectomy alternatives include:

  • Uterine fibroid embolization through interventional radiology
  • Myomectomy
  • Endometrial ablation
  • Myolysis
  • MRgFUS, or MRI guided forced ultrasound

Here at Sound Vascular, we specialize in interventional radiology as a treatment option for various medical conditions, including uterine fibroids.  Uterine fibroid embolization, or UFE, is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure performed by our interventional radiologist.  UFE treatment involves inserting a catheter, or small tube, through the femoral artery through a small incision in the groin.  By xray or ultrasound, the catheter is then guided to the uterine artery where tiny embolic particles are injected through the catheter and into the blood vessels that supply the fibroids, cutting off their blood supply.    The fibroids will then shrink, sparing the uterus and ovaries.

Uterine fibroid embolization treatment is done on an outpatient basis.  We will see that our patients are comfortable throughout their treatment.  Our patients may receive mild sedation and a numbing medication to relieve any discomfort. Our UFE patients are able to go home soon after the procedure.

It is important to discuss treatment options for symptomatic uterine fibroids with your ob/gyn or family physician.  Your medical consultation should include reviewing the risks and benefits associated with each treatment option available.  To make an informed decision, do your own research about uterine fibroid treatment options.  Research online, talk to other women, even get a second opinion.  Whether your ob/gyn refers you to Sound Vascular, or you self-refer for treatment, our physicians will help you make the best treatment decision for your health.  It is important that you are comfortable with your treatment, and you and your doctor have discussed and agree on a treatment plan that’s right for you.
